A lightweight static scanner for agent skill markdown before install.

Zero-dependency TypeScript sanitizer for agent skill markdown.

skill-safe is a static pre-install gate. It scans skill files for prompt injection, jailbreak markers, data exfiltration, script injection, LLM format injection, and excessive privilege claims. It is designed for marketplaces, workspace skill loaders, and local agent UIs that need a fast first-pass review before a skill is installed or enabled.

It is not a sandbox. A safe scan result means no known static red flags were found; runtime permissions, tool allowlists, filesystem isolation, network policy, and human review still matter.

Why skill-safe

skill-safe is a small deterministic first gate for agent skill markdown.

It is intentionally narrower than full agent-security platforms. It does not run skills, sandbox tools, call an LLM, or inventory every agent runtime on the machine. Instead, it gives marketplaces, local agent UIs, and CI workflows a fast static pre-install check that can run before a skill is trusted.

By default the CLI exits nonzero only for block. You can tighten or relax that:

Suppression audit catches stale or mistyped ignore comments:

The audit reports suppressions for unknown rule IDs and suppressions that no longer match an active finding.

What It Catches

  • Prompt injection such as instruction overrides.
  • Identity hijacking and jailbreak language.
  • External network exfiltration through browser, Node, shell, Python, and PowerShell patterns.
  • Script injection and dynamic execution hints.
  • LLM control-token and chat-format injection.
  • Hidden content such as invisible Unicode runs and large encoded payloads.
  • Human-in-the-loop bypass or self-approval instructions.
  • Composite "Lethal Trifecta" risk: instruction override plus network/code execution.

The scanner normalizes text before matching. It handles common obfuscation such as zero-width characters, Unicode escapes, HTML entities, and spaced protocol or command tokens.

Reports

Every scan returns both raw flags and a structured static report:

The report is designed for UI badges, marketplace review, CI output, and later semantic/runtime scanner layers. It is still deterministic: no network calls, no LLM calls, and no filesystem access.

skill-safe keeps these labels as governance context rather than treating a static regex match as a complete incident classification. Hosts can still use specific labels to block, quarantine, or require review.

Trust Levels

resolveSkillTrustLevel(source, bundled) maps raw source labels into:

  • verified
  • managed
  • workspace
  • community
  • unknown

requiresSanitization() returns true for workspace, community, and unknown. Workspace skills are local and mutable, so they should still be scanned even if they are not treated like community content in the UI.

Community rule additions should usually only touch src/rules.ts.

Examples And Smoke Test

The package includes runnable examples that consume the built dist output, not private source files.

pnpm example:smoke scans safe and malicious fixtures, exercises a mocked github: resolver, exercises a custom hermes: resolver, then writes JSON and Markdown artifacts under examples/reports/. The batch report is expected to fail because it includes the malicious fixture; the safe-only report is expected to pass.

Suppression modes:

  • disabled — suppression comments are not parsed at all (strict default).
  • report-only — suppressions are parsed and surfaced, but all flags remain in the report (safe default for untrusted content).
  • honor — suppression comments filter matching flags from the report. Only use for workspace/verified sources where the author is trusted.

The core scanner produces evidence. Host applications decide whether to install, warn, quarantine, require review, or block.

Layered Reports

@gsknnft/skill-safe owns the deterministic static report.

The companion packages use compatible report envelopes:

  • @gsknnft/skill-safe-judge emits skill-safe-judge.report.v1 for optional LLM semantic review.
  • @gsknnft/skill-safe-runtime emits skill-safe-runtime.report.v1 for runtime tool-call decisions and traces.

This keeps the core scanner fast and deterministic while still allowing richer LLM and runtime reports in hosts such as Claw3D, WorkLab, Campus, or CI.

Known Limitations

skill-safe is a deterministic static scanner. It does not:

  • Execute skills or run tools. A passing scan is not proof the skill is safe at runtime.
  • Sandbox execution. Runtime isolation is the responsibility of the host agent runtime.
  • Perform semantic review. It does not understand intent — it matches patterns and heuristics.
  • Catch all obfuscation. The normalizer handles common cases; determined adversaries may evade static analysis.
  • Check author identity. Source trust levels (verified, managed, community) are set by the host, not proven by the scanner.
  • Replace human review. For high-assurance environments, pair with skill-safe-judge and a human approval step.

A safeToInstall: true result means no known static red flags were found at scan time. Runtime permissions, tool allowlists, filesystem isolation, network policy, and human review still matter.
