A simple, embeddable PDF viewer that works on both PC and mobile, powered by PDF.js.

Package Exports

  • xpdf-viewer
  • xpdf-viewer/pdf.js

This package does not declare an exports field, so the exports above have been automatically detected and optimized by JSPM instead. If any package subpath is missing, it is recommended to post an issue to the original package (xpdf-viewer) to support the "exports" field. If that is not possible, create a JSPM override to customize the exports field for this package.

xpdf-viewer

A simple, embeddable PDF viewer that works on both PC and mobile, powered by PDF.js.

Features

  • Easy to Embed: Just one line of HTML and one script tag.
  • Responsive: Automatically adjusts to the PDF's aspect ratio.
  • Multiple Controls: Navigate with buttons, mouse wheel, and touch swipes.
  • Fullscreen Mode: View documents without distractions.
  • Customizable Size: Easily set the viewer size directly in your HTML.
  • High-Res Display: Renders crisply on high-DPI (Retina) screens.

Usage

  1. Load the Script

    Add the following script tag to the bottom of your <body>.

    Use current version:

    <script src="https://unpkg.com/xpdf-viewer@3.1.5/pdf.js" defer></script>

    Use latest version:

    <script src="https://unpkg.com/xpdf-viewer/pdf.js" defer></script>
  2. Embed the Viewer

    Place an <embed> tag where you want the viewer to appear.

    • Use the xpdf class.
    • Use data-pdf to specify the path to your PDF file.
    • Use data-pdf-size (optional) to set the viewer's size. The default is 90vw.

    Basic Example (Default size: 90% of screen width):

    <embed class="xpdf" data-pdf="./path/to/your/document.pdf" />

    Custom Size Example (80% of screen height):

    <embed class="xpdf" data-pdf="./another.pdf" data-pdf-size="80vh" />

    The data-pdf-size attribute accepts any valid CSS size unit:

    • vw (viewport width) makes the viewer's width the primary dimension.
    • vh (viewport height) makes the viewer's height the primary dimension.
    • You can also use % or px.

Advanced Usage for SPAs (v3.0.0+)

Since SPAs (Single-Page Applications) load content dynamically, you need to manually initialize the viewer after your PDF <embed> tags are added to the page. Version 3.0.0 and later exposes a global function for this purpose.

Simply call window.initializeXpdfViewers() after rendering your dynamic content. The script will find any new, uninitialized viewers on the page and activate them.

Example:

// Your SPA's rendering logic
function renderArticle(content) {
  const contentArea = document.getElementById("content-area");
  contentArea.innerHTML = content; // New content with <embed> tags is added here

  // Manually initialize any new PDF viewers
  if (window.initializeXpdfViewers) {
    window.initializeXpdfViewers();
  }
}
